Ernie Ball Music Man Electric Basses
New For 2017
30th Anniversary StingRay 5
Since its introduction in 1986, the StingRay5 has been embraced as one of the world’s most innovative bass designs. To celebrate, Ernie Ball Music Man is proud to introduce the 30th Anniversary StingRay5. The ash body sports a transparent buttercream finish and each neck features roasted figured maple. Your choice of maple or rosewood fretboard is accented with a white binding, white face dots and stainless steel frets. The preamp and pickup are exclusive to this anniversary model, providing both ample punch and articulation. Each instrument ships with a red tortoise shell pickguard and a certificate of authenticity. Pre-sales begin March 3.
Old Smoothie (New Finishes)
Named for its smooth even tone that is reminiscent of the highly sought after vintage Music Man StingRay sound, “Old Smoothie” has been precisely reproduced including the one-of-a-kind custom made 10 pole piece Alnico pickup design, alder body, headstock and pickguard shape, 34-inch scale maple neck and fingerboard, high profile narrow frets, 2-band active electronics, and hardware. Available in two new color options, Mint Green and Butterscotch. Pre-sales begin March 3.
StingRay 4 Bass (New Finishes)
First introduced in 1976, the StingRay has been revered as one of the most iconic bass guitars in history. The StingRay was the first production four string bass to feature on-board active equalization. The flagship of the Music Man line, today’s StingRay is the same as it was some forty years ago featuring a solid roadworthy construction, massive hardened steel bridge, elegant oval pickguard, 3+1 tuning key configuration, and the ever popular Music Man humbucker. All of which combined produce a look, feel and sound that are remarkably unmistakable. Available in Firemist Gold and Firemist Purple with black hardware, and reissued Powder Blue finishes. Pre-sales begin March 3.
StingRay 5 Bass (New Finishes)
The first bass designed by Ernie Ball Music Man, the Stingray 5 was unveiled in 1987 and has been an industry standard for extended range basses ever since. With its powerful punchy sound, the added flexibility of additional pickups and a comfortably contoured body the StingRay5 satisfies even the most demanding of players. Available in Firemist Purple and Firemist Gold with black hardware, and reissued Powder Blue finishes. Pre-sales begin March 3.
Bongo Bass
The Bongo represents everything a modern bass should be: well balanced, comfortable, resonant and expressive with effortless playability. The double cutaway basswood body design is of superior construction and along with a 24 fret finished neck offers unimpeded access for high register two octave fretwork. Available in single humbucking, double humbucking and humbucking single configurations the Bongo along with it’s 4 band eq, neodymium pickups and 18V active preamp deliver a powerful combination of unparalleled tonal diversity. Available in Firemist Gold and Firemist Purple finishes, both with black hardware. Pre-sales begin March 3.
StingRay Electric Bass
StingRay 4
Today’s StingRay shares many of the same features as the original Stingray and has a few added refinements. The solid roadworthy construction, massive hardened steel bridge, elegant oval pickguard, 3+1 tuning key configuration, and ever popular Music Man humbucker are unchanged. The addition of a 3-band EQ system with added mid control, a 6-bolt neck fastening system, and a truss rod wheel make this bass a welcomed modern edition of the original 1976 Stingray design. Buy this if you want the popular StingRay bass design, the unmistakably punchy and classic sound with modern updates and refinements, and the flexibility of multiple pickup options.Classic StingRay 4
The Classic Stingray pays tribute to the original Music Man design with a string through body bridge, mute kit, small profile nickel frets, and a rounder 7.5″ radius fretboard. A modern six bolt neck attachment and an easy access truss rod adjustment wheel ensure solid construction with no-hassle adjustments. The classic tone remains true to the original with a slab ash body, 2-band EQ and a standard Music Man Alnico pickup.
Buy this if you want the classic 2-EQ StingRay tone with a slab ash body, smaller vintage frets, and finished neck.
StingRay 40th Anniversary
The 40th Anniversary “Old Smoothie” StingRay is a faithful reproduction of StingRay prototype #26. It has a custom made 10 pole piece pickup design, body headstock and pickguard shape, 34-inch scale maple neck and fingerboard, high profile narrow frets, active electronics, hardware, and exclusive chocolate-burst finish.
Buy this if you want the StingRay 4 design with a slightly mellower and smoother tone but want to retain all the original StingRay vintage features.StingRay 4 Neckthrough
The StingRay 4 Neckthrough features an updated low noise preamp that provides a full and robust tonality while retaining excellent clarity and crisp attack. It features a 3 piece maple neck through ash body with a rosewood fretboard for plenty of sustain and a smooth, solid feel.
Buy this if you want the iconic StingRay tone with the superior high register fret access and more resonant construction that you get with a neckthrough bass design.StingRay 5
The Stingray 5 was unveiled in 1987 and has been the industry standard 5 string ever since. It features a powerful punchy sound, the added flexibility of a 3-way switch, optional neck pickups and a comfortably contoured body.
Buy this if you want a powerful bolt-on 5-string electric bass guitar with modern design elements and the flexibility of multiple pickup options.
Classic StingRay 5
The StingRay 5 classic has the slab body shape of the StingRay 4, but a rounder 7.5” fretboard radius. It offers a 2-band EQ with a tone that remains true to the original StingRay, thanks to an Alnico pickup and ash body.
Buy this if you want a 5-string bass with classic vintage tone and original StingRay 4 body styling.
StingRay 5 Neckthrough
The StingRay 5 Neckthrough features an updated low noise preamp that provides a full and robust tonality while retaining excellent clarity and crisp attack.
Buy this if you want the features of the StingRay 5 plus the superior high register fret access and the added resonance you get with a neckthrough design.Sterling Electric Bass
Sterling 4
The Sterling shares the StingRay’s 11” radius fingerboard profile, but comes stock with ceramic pickups and utilizes a slightly smaller body and narrow neck width. The ceramic pickups provide a more aggressive sound with an inherently stronger midrange presence that will help you cut through mix. A 3 way switch and optional pickups in the neck position add to the versatility.
Buy this if you want a more aggressive sound with stronger midrange presence, and smaller body and neck profile vs. the StingRay models.Sterling 5
As with its 4 string counterpart, the Sterling 5 boasts a big sound in a smaller, more ergonomic design. 9 volt active 3 band EQ, 3 position pickup selector switch and a ceramic humbucker with hum canceling phantom coil come standard.
Buy this if you want a 5-string bass guitar with ceramic pickups and the slimmer Sterling design.Cutlass Electric Bass
Our Cutlass bass is a passive bass, and has a 7.5” neck radius like the Classic StingRay (vs 11” for the Sterling and original StingRay 4). It features rich, vintage tone surrounded by streamlined, modern appointments for ultimate comfort and playability. It also has an old school split-coil humbucking design for a big round bottom end tone. The top-loading bridge is made from hardened steel and complemented by a newly designed oversized headstock with the familiar 3+1 tuner arrangement.
Buy this if you want the rich vintage tones classically associated with passive basses.Caprice Electric Bass
The Caprice bass is passive and shares the Cutlass’ 7.5” neck radius, but has an extra pickup. The extra pickup closer to the bridge allows you to blend two distinct voicings offering a variety of tones.
Buy this if you want a passive bass with an extra pickup that provides a wider variety of tones.Bongo Electric Bass
Bongo 4, 5, 6
The Bongo represents everything we think a modern bass guitar should be. Its shape may be unconventional, but it is one of the most balanced basses you’ll find. The double cutaway basswood body design and 24 fret finished neck offer unimpeded access for two octave fretwork. Available in single humbucking, double humbucking and humbucking single configurations, the Bongo along with its 4 band eq, powerful neodymium pickups and 18V active preamp deliver a powerful combination of unparalleled tonal diversity. Available in 4, 5, and 6 string models. Buy this if you want unmatched balance, modern styling, and powerful neodymium pickups with a 18v low noise pre-amp.Technical Specifications

Kill The Egg:
I have an Music Man guitar, JPX6, and absolutely love this guitar. However, your bass guitars with the Egg-Shaped pick guard in the center are the UGLIEST THINGS I’VE EVER SEEN.
First, bassists don’t use plastic picks, if any pick at all, so scratching the surface is not an issue. Secondly, Egg-Shaped? Come on man. That is just plain Ugly!!!!!
Please consider making your basses with No pick guard and show off the wood and not the plastic.
You know you can just take off the pick guard right?
The StingRay bass body and pickguard are the iconic look that bass players know and love. It’s similar to the body and pickguard on a LP; very iconic and cool.
Your statement about pickguards and a bass player’s use of a plastic pick is among the most ignorant I’ve seen. When you leave your mom’s basement, you should re-evaluate your statement and re-post.
Cheers!
And FINALLY…the Best Bass in history….beyond the Bongo Bass:
-The GAME CHANGER Bass.
It is exactly what it is called.
It’s almost every bass You’ve ever played
in ONE bass guitar.
I’m a Precision man. Super classic sound.
I’m a Bongo man. Super modern & classic sound.
-But The Game Changer Bass is all of them.
Analog and flexible in a second.
If You try it You will want it. It’s a fact.
On stage: the pickup-sound You desire, flex in a moment.
In studio: choose from hundreds of pickup-setups.
It’s both all classic history, and all hi tech.
After playing another brand of bass for 40 years, I tried a Stingray 5 and I just fell in love with it. The tone and power it had was amazing and it played perfectly. That was 11 years ago. I now have the Stingray 5 HH which has more tonal options. The Stingray has the easiest truss rod to adjust by simply turning the wheel. I can remember having to take the neck off my other bass to adjust it and the neck will never have to come off my bass. My bass has been in lots of bar gigs and has held up perfectly. Thanks for making an outstanding product.
We need more left handed models !! why not the Classic Stingray ???? I have been trying to buy a left handed for a long time but it seems impossible !!
and other thing – in the site, we cant see the final configuration for the chosen instument !!!! you make the configurations for the colour and the wood, etc, and … you cant see the final look for the instrument … i think this is not too difficult !!!
